Butterfly Walk

Join us on Saturday 12th August for our annual Butterfly Walk - a chance to wander around the wetlands and (hopefully!) see a variety of different species of butterflies and day-flying moths.

This event takes place at the end of the Big Butterfly Count (14 July - 6 August) which is promoted by Butterfly Conservation.

As you may know, Butterfly Conservation has recently published research revealing a dramatic increase in UK butterfly species now threatened with extinction. That is why surveying the butterfly population is so important.

We will provide some of their identification charts on the day, so that you can log what you see throughout your walk.

You can also expect to see a range of other insects including bees, hoverflies, damselflies and dragonflies.

This walk will be very much dependent on the weather.

In the event that it is not a warm and sunny 'butterfly-friendly' day, then you can expect the walk to become more of a general 'nature trail' with less emphasis on the butterflies, who will be hiding!

What to wear

Please note that, at this time of year, it is unlikely that the areas we will access will have been mowed, so they may well be quite over-grown.

It is therefore important to dress appropriately, to avoid the risk of stings, scratches and bites so no shorts or short-sleeves please. Please also bring a hat, sunscreen and refreshments and wear sturdy walking-type boots.

Who is it suitable for?

This walk is perfect for people of all ages, but will involve walking on some uneven surfaces.

The walk is not suitable for prams / pushchairs / those with mobility issues, as we will be walking off the main paths in places.

Children / families are most welcome, and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Regrettably, as this is a nature reserve, no dogs are allowed.

Where is it?

The event will start from the compound area of the Wetlands. This is situated opposite Oban Court on Preston Road, where the new viewing screens are.

Where to park

If you live locally and are able to, please consider walking to the event.

If coming from further afield, we will be providing parking between the hours of 1.30pm and 4.00pm at Grimsargh Village Hall, nearby (PR2 5JS).

Where to meet

Meet at the Compound, which is the area leading up to the viewing screens opposite Oban Court, off Preston Road.
